This classic Italian dessert gets its name from the Italian word meaning “drowned.” The affogato consists of a scoop of vanilla gelato “drowned” in a shot of fresh hot espresso

  • 1 scoop vanilla gelato or vanilla ice cream
  • 2 ounces espresso

  • Place the gelato in a small glass, pour the espresso on top, and dig in.

Notes

RECIPE TIP: The coffee world is continuously experimenting with ways to vary this
classic, and you should, too! Variations include using ice cream instead of gelato,
experimenting with ice cream/gelato flavors, and adding some Irish cream or
hazelnut liqueur for a spiked twist.
